Climate and energy budgets for FY2026 (by category)
The Japanese government’s climate and energy budget for FY2026 stands at 4.7 trillion yen (3.3% of the total government budget). In its breakdown by category (inner circle), renewable energy accounts for only 3%. Energy efficiency represents a large share (52%), but around 60% of this is allocated to AI/semiconductors, which may lead to an increase in energy consumption that could outweigh the expected energy-saving effects. Within the GX budget (outer circle), allocations are highest for energy efficiency, cross-sectoral measures, and nuclear power / fusion energy.
